When he returned to Illinois that fall, he found that Elsie had taken a job as commercial artist in Chicago. He returned to California for a second time in 1911. He was always artistically talented and he worked as an itinerant house painter, sign painter and set designer and scenic artist for traveling theatrical productions. His was a hardscrabble childhood and he struck out on his own at the age of fourteen.
